FARIDOON SHAHRYAR: INTERVISTA ESCLUSIVA

Lo avrete visto in azione in centinaia di filmati: Faridoon Shahryar è uno dei volti più noti del giornalismo indiano. Responsabile della sezione video del sito Bollywood Hungama, Faridoon ha intervistato tutte le superstar e le celebrità del cinema popolare in lingua hindi. I suoi modi estremamente educati hanno conquistato schiere di appassionati. E non dimentichiamo la gentilezza che Faridoon riserva ai fan stranieri: è grazie a lui se sono riuscita a porre qualche domanda a divi altrimenti irraggiungibili come Amitabh Bachchan, Ajay Devgan, Vidya Balan, Saif Ali Khan, Ram Gopal Varma, Deepika Padukone, R. Balki, Arbaaz Khan, eccetera.

Forse non sapete che Faridoon Shahryar è anche paroliere e cantante. In passato vi ho segnalato alcuni suoi brani. Recentemente Faridoon ha coronato il sogno di realizzare un album, e ce lo presenta in questa intervista esclusiva.

1 - Per favore, ci racconti la sua esperienza in ambito musicale precedente alla realizzazione del suo primo album.

Ho sempre avuto inclinazione per la musica. Ho appreso la musica classica dalla tradizione musicale nota come Agra Atrauli Gharana, dal momento che, per qualsiasi tipo di musica (ma soprattutto per il canto), una base classica è fondamentale. Ho partecipato a concorsi, mi sono esibito dal vivo, ho poi composto, prodotto e interpretato più di un centinaio di jingle per la pubblicità.

2 - La musica delle sue canzoni è di Navneet Kedar. Cosa può dirci di lui? Com'è nato il vostro sodalizio?

Conosco Navneet da quando avevo 12 o 13 anni. Lui mi ha fatto ascoltare musica di ogni genere, occidentale, rock, pop, ghazal (*), colonne sonore indiane, eccetera. Lui è ingegnere, con una sensibilità musicale pazzesca. Gestisce uno studio di registrazione nella mia città d'origine, Aligarh. Navneet ed io cominciammo a registrare le opere poetiche di mio padre, il professor Shahryar, circa cinque anni fa. Abbiamo registrato parecchi nazm (**) e ghazal. Sette di queste canzoni sono state presentate dal noto portale musicale Artist Aloud. I video di due di questi brani, Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi e Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise, sono già stati visualizzati più di 200.000 volte.

(*) Uno dei generi più celebri della musica classica indiana. In parole estremamente povere, si tratta di tradurre in musica delle opere poetiche, i ghazal, che rispondono a regole di composizione e di contenuto ben precise. (Nota di Cinema Hindi)

3 - Suo padre, il professor Shahryar, era un poeta in lingua urdu. La poesia urdu vanta un'illustre tradizione ed è tutt'oggi molto amata. Suo padre le ha mai confidato cosa rappresentasse per lui la poesia?

Sì, lui aveva l'abitudine di recitarmi tutte le sue opere. In effetti io sono sempre stato il primo ad ascoltarle. Discorrevamo di poesia nel dettaglio. Io ho scritto poesie in inglese per più di 20 anni ormai, e le ho pubblicate in vari Paesi.

4 - Quando ha iniziato a tradurre in canzoni le opere di suo padre? Suo padre cosa ne pensava?

Circa 13 anni fa, con Shab-E-Gham Kya Karein. Di recente l'ho registrata con l'arrangiamento musicale di Navneet, e a mio padre era piaciuta davvero molto. L'aveva memorizzata nel suo cellulare e l'ascoltava in continuazione. Altre due canzoni che è riuscito ad ascoltare prima di morire sono state Naseem-E-Soobh Ro Rahi Hai e Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise.

5 - Qual è stato il criterio adottato nel selezionare le poesie da trasformare in canzoni per il suo album?

Navneet ed io eravamo ben decisi del fatto che non avremmo operato una selezione con lo scopo di compiacere qualcuno. Abbiamo scelto testi poetici seri, di significato profondo e di forma raffinata. Abbiamo registrato un pezzo alla volta, senza fretta, impiegando uno o due mesi per ciascun brano: composizione, arrangiamento musicale, registrazione e mixing definitivo.

6 - Quante sono le canzoni incluse nell'album? Può dirci il titolo dell'album e l'argomento di ciascuna canzone?

Artist Aloud ha da tempo presentato sette pezzi. Il titolo dell'album è Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise. I brani sono i seguenti:

2) Shab-E-Gham Kya Karein

3) Khwaab Se Rishta

4) Naseem-E-Soobh Ro Rahi Hai

5) Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi

6) Tum Mere Kitne Paas Ho

L'argomento di quasi tutte le canzoni è astratto e di difficile definizione. I testi trattano di solitudine, senso della vita e di vuoto, emozioni notturne, eccetera.

7 - Cosa prova quando interpreta dal vivo queste canzoni?

Mi piace moltissimo. Vorrei cantarle in pubblico il più possibile, magari un giorno anche in Italia.

8 - In India, la musica al di fuori delle colonne sonore ha vita dura. Sopravvive la tradizione classica, ma il pop, il rock o la dance (per citare solo alcuni generi) stentano a guadagnarsi spazio e a reperire investimenti. Secondo lei, cos'andrebbe fatto per stimolare nell'ascoltatore indiano l'interesse per la musica non da film?

I canali radiofonici e televisivi e gli organizzatori di eventi dovrebbero sostenerla di più. Negli anni novanta la musica indipendente funzionava tantissimo in India, ma oggi è praticamente inesistente. Manca la fiducia da parte degli investitori. Spero proprio si tratti di un fenomeno solo temporaneo.

9 - L'ascoltatore interessato alla musica indipendente indiana, come può accedervi? Esistono pubblicazioni, canali radiofonici o siti internet che le dedicano spazio? MTV India è sensibile all'argomento?

Artist Aloud sta facendo un ottimo lavoro al riguardo, ma le etichette e i canali musicali non offrono grande sostegno.

10 - Ha ascoltato i brani che sta realizzando Priyanka Chopra per il suo debutto sulla scena pop occidentale? Cosa ne pensa?

In my city mi piace un sacco. Priyanka ha l'atteggiamento e la stoffa da pop star internazionale. Himesh Reshammiya sta per pubblicare un album in inglese, @Da Edge. Ho ascoltato alcuni pezzi, e ritengo abbiano grande potenziale.

11 - Le sue interviste alle star del firmamento hindi sono ormai diventate una piacevole abitudine quotidiana per tutti gli appassionati di cinema indiano. Ora come si sente ad essere lei l'intervistato? Eccitato? Annoiato dalle domande sempre uguali che le vengono poste?

Mi piace moltissimo essere intervistato. Quando tocca a me intervistare, cerco sempre di non dare mai per scontate le celebrità che incontro, e neppure di prendere le interviste alla leggera. Godo di ogni opportunità, ed è questo l'atteggiamento che mantengo anche se sono io ad essere intervistato.

1 - Mr. Faridoon, please, tell us about your music experience before the project of your first album.

Well, I've always been inclined towards music. I learnt classical music from the Agra Atrauli Gharana since for any sort of music (especially vocals), some sort of classical training is a must. I participated in competitions, performed live, went on to write, produce and sing over 100 ad jingles.

2 - The music of your songs has been composed by Navneet Kedar. What could you tell us about him? When did your association with him begin?

I have known Navneet since I was 12 or 13. He introduced me to all sorts of music, Western, Rock, Pop, Ghazals, Hindi film music etc. He is an engineer by qualification and has a tremendous music sense. He runs a recording studio in my home town Aligarh. We started recording my father Professor Shahryar's poetry around five years back. Over a period of time we recorded several Nazms and Ghazals. Seven of these compositions have been launched by premiere online music portal Artist Aloud. Music videos of two of these compositions Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi and Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise have crossed over two lac video views so far.

3 - Your father, professor Shahryar, was an Urdu poet. Urdu poetry has an illustrious history and it's still very popular. Did your father unbosom to you what poetry meant to him?

Yes, he used to make me listen to all his compositions. In fact I was his first audience for the last twenty years before he passed away. We discussed poetry in detail. I have been writing poems in English for over twenty years now and published in various parts of the world.

4 - When did you start to adapt your father's poetry into songs? How was his feedback?

I composed one of my father's ghazals Shab-E-Gham Kya Karein almost thirteen years back. When I re recorded it recently with Navneet's music arrangements, my father really liked it a lot. He recorded it on his mobile and listened to it again and again. Two more compositions that he listened during his lifetime were Naseem-E-Soobh Ro Rahi Hai and Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise.

5 - What was the criterion used in selecting the poems turned into songs for your album?

That's a very good question. Both me and Navneet were very clear that we are not going to choose poetry to please anyone. We chose poems which were serious, carried deeper meaning and yet had very fine connotations. We recorded one number at a time and we never hurried into it. Each number has been recorded over a span of month or maybe two. Composing, music arrangements, recording and then the final mixing.

6 - How many songs will you include in the album? What's the title of the album? Please, tell us the topic of each song.

Artist Aloud has so far launched seven numbers. The title of the album is Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise. Each of the numbers are as follows:

1) Palkon Ko Bhigoyen Kaise

2) Shab-E-Gham Kya Karein

3) Khwaab Se Rishta

4) Naseem-E-Soobh Ro Rahi Hai

5) Wo Andheri Raat Ki Chaap Thi

6) Tum Mere Kitne Paas Ho

7) Kahin Kuch Kam Hai.

The theme of almost all the songs is abstract and it is difficult to bind it in a topic. But yes, the songs deal with loneliness, vacum in life, the vagaries of night, questioning life in itself etc.

7 - How do you feel when you perform these songs live?

I love it whenever I perform these songs live. I would want to perform as much as possible, maybe for an Italian audience someday too.

8 - In India the music not for films has a hard life. Classical tradition survives, but pop, rock or dance (just to name a few) are struggling to gain visibility and attract investors. What do you think could help to create interest in independent music in India?

More support has to come from radio channels, television channels and event managers. There was a time in the 1990s when Independent music in India was doing extremely well but today it is almost non existent. The belief is missing from the investors and I genuinely hope it is raised once again.

9 - Are there any magazines, radio channels or internet sites entirely or partially dedicated to independent music? Does MTV India offer visibility?

Well, Artist Aloud is doing a wonderful job in that regard. But music labels and music channels are not too supportive.

10 - Have you listened to Priyanka Chopra's international debut songs? Do you like them?

I really like In my city. Priyanka has a great texture and attitude that goes with being an international pop artiste. Himesh Reshammiya is coming up with his English album @Da Edge. I've heard a few of the songs from this album and I think it has a huge potential.

11 - Your interviews with Hindi celebrities are a pleasant daily habit for fans of that film industry. Now how do you feel to be interviewed? More excited or more bored by the same questions put again and again and again...?

Your questions were wonderful and I really enjoyed the experience of being interviewed. During my interviews with celebrities I always try and ensure that I should never ever take any interview or celebrity for granted or lightly. I enjoy every experience and that's how I look at it when someone else interviews me.
